Why Rest Is NOT Always the Answer to Heal Your Pain or Injury

For so many athletes or parents their greatest concern is how and if it is safe to keep training when they experience pain or are recovery in from an injury. They often fear of losing their performance gains and ability to compete at the levels they need to to qualify for teams, playing time, scholarships or recruitment.
Here’s a common sport injury scenario….

An athlete experiences a mild sprain, or starts to notice recurring pain and limitation and gets it checked out without any remarkable or concerning findings from their health practitioner. They are advised to rest, take pain medications and use a brace. After a few weeks they get rid of the brace, yet the sprain still hurts and now they feel stiff and more unstable on it.

“Just resting” is problematic for many reasons, here are some main ones:

1. Rest doesn’t actually FIX anything: This is because the MAIN CAUSE of the problem is not addressed by rest alone. Rest just ignores the problem.

2. Whole body de-conditioning: Typically the athlete’s pain is localized to one area of their body, back, ankle, knee, shoulder or a specific muscle group. Even if one part of your body is injured, the other 95% of your body is still healthy and capable of training. Shutting down completely when injured is the BIGGEST MISTAKE an athlete can make, and the athlete’s entire body loses strength, power, endurance, and flexibility. The rest of your body will get de-conditioned, weak, tight, and depression may set in because you are not releasing through exercise the “feel good” endorphins you were previously. Just because your ankle hurts doesn’t me you still can’t workout. The issue is that most players, parents, coaches or trainers do not know how to modify and adapt an athlete’s training to accommodate for their injury.

So what’s the best thing for the (parent) athlete to do? Identify and address the CAUSE of the problem. This can be accomplished by working with a specialist sports Physical Therapist at Perseverance Physical Therapy & Pilates.
